Spinney Mountain Reservoir

Located in the heart of South Park near Lake George, Colorado, Spinney Mountain Reservoir is widely regarded as one of the premier stillwater trout fisheries in the West. Designated as a Gold Medal fishery, this 2,500-acre reservoir consistently produces large rainbow trout, brown trout, and northern pike, making it a favorite destination for anglers seeking both quality and quantity.

Spinney is best known for its prolific aquatic insect life and exceptional fly fishing opportunities. From spring through fall, anglers can experience outstanding chironomid, damselfly, caddis, and mayfly hatches. While productive shoreline fishing can be found on the reservoir’s expansive flats, the most effective way to fish Spinney is from a boat, allowing anglers to cover water and target actively feeding trout. Indicator nymphing is the most common and productive technique, though streamer fishing and dry fly opportunities can provide some of the most exciting action of the season.

Surrounded by panoramic mountain views and open prairie, Spinney offers a uniquely scenic fly fishing experience. Anglers should come prepared for rapidly changing weather conditions, as the reservoir is fully exposed to the elements and South Park’s famous winds. On calm days, however, Spinney Mountain Reservoir can provide some of the finest stillwater fly fishing Colorado has to offer.
